The most common symptom of bad gas caps is probably a loose gas cap or a gas cap that will not tighten completely. This may not seem significant at first, but if it’s not fully sealed then the fuel system can be exposed to dirt and grime. If your gas cap isn’t closing properly, check the gasket to be sure it’s not missing or brittle. If you drive an old car or truck, be sure the metal gas cap isn’t damaged or bent. Both a bad seal or bent gas cap can lead to the gas cap issues and may even require purchasing a replacement from the original manufacturer.
What problems can a loose gas cap cause? How about a check engine light for starters? A loose gas cap will not only let in grime and dirt, but it can allow fuel vapors to escape the fuel tank. These vapors can produce an error in the emissions system, which could cause the check engine light to illuminate. Dirt and Grime that gets into the fuel tank can also contaminate the injectors. Perhaps the biggest indicator of a bad gas cap is the gasoline smell in your vehicle.
If your vehicle wasn’t made with a capless fuel tank, you shouldn’t drive without a gas cap. If your vehicle is a little older, there is a possibility that gas could leak out from the tank during aggressive cornering or other enthusiastic driving. If you drive without a gas cap, it can lead to reduced fuel efficiency because the fuel may evaporate without the correct seal on the fuel filler. The gasoline smell is the fuel evaporating from the gas tank, which causes diminished gas mileage.
