If you see your vehicle lights dimming while driving, it’s probably going to be from a dying battery. If your battery is normal, there are other trouble areas that are likely causing the issue. Whether it’s the car battery or something else, you should have the problem diagnosed and repaired ASAP. When your lights aren’t working properly, you might become a danger to other drivers.

If the vehicle battery isn’t the reason for your flickering car lights, you might be dealing with a failing light bulb or a bad fuse. Light bulbs are an easy fix and present an opportunity to upgrade to new energy-efficient LED bulbs.
If it is a bad fuse, you could be looking at a larger issue than you had originally thought. A fuse fails when there is excess electrical current flowing through it. For example, if your anti-lock brakes are installed with a 10amp fuse, and the fuse gets more than 10amps of electrical current, the fuse would fail. In this situation, your anti-lock brakes could fail due to the failed fuse. If there is a fuse that regularly fails, bring your vehicle in so we can diagnose the bigger, potentially more serious problem.
Lights flickering on the dashboard can also be signs your alternator is failing. Think of it this way, you have battery power to start your car, but to keep your vehicle running, the power comes from the alternator. If you have an old vehicle with halogen headlights, you may see them slowly get dimmer with a dying alternator. On new cars with HID or LED lights, they may flicker on and off or just stop functioning altogether.
A bad light switch, either the headlight switch or the interior dimmer, also needs to be checked out when you have flickering car lights. In some uncommon situations, just replacing a worn switch might solve the issue, especially in vehicles with excessive wear or older vehicles. If your car is newer, it could be a sign of a more serious issue with the car’s electrical system.
